When Crisis Strikes, Compassion Moves First
Late in the evening on June 24th, smoke and flames filled the skyline along North Front Street in Allentown as a fire erupted inside the former American Atelier furniture factory. What began around 8:40 p.m. quickly escalated into a devastating six-alarm emergency, drawing firefighters from across the region to battle one of the city’s largest recent fires.
By sunrise, the flames had been contained but for seven households, the damage left behind was life changing. Families suddenly found themselves without the comfort, safety, and familiarity of home.
In the earliest hours of the emergency, the American Red Cross Pennsylvania Rivers Chapter responded immediately, helping displaced residents with emergency assistance. As recovery efforts began to take shape, Catholic Charities Diocese of Allentown joined the response to help families navigate the difficult days ahead.
Father John Gibbons, Pastor of Immaculate Conception BVM and Sacred Heart parishes, met with Pamela Russo, Interim Executive Director of Catholic Charities, Diocese of Allentown, and Lisa Geosits, Director of Operations and Community Engagement, near the scene of the fire. Without hesitation, Sacred Heart Parish was offered as a place of refuge and support for affected residents.
“During moments like this, collaboration matters,” said Pamela Russo. “Organizations, churches, and neighbors all come together to ensure families know they are supported and cared for.”
Throughout the response, the focus remained not only on emergency needs, but on the people behind them as families begin the difficult process of rebuilding after unexpected loss.
Catholic Charities continues to work alongside the American Red Cross Pennsylvania Rivers Chapter as recovery efforts continue. While emergency response agencies address urgent immediate needs, Catholic Charities remains committed to accompanying families through the longer path toward stability, healing, and hope.
This outreach reflects the mission lived out every day across the Diocese of Allentown. It is the same compassionate care extended to families impacted by the June 11 Oak Forest apartment fire in Reading, and the same commitment Catholic Charities brings to communities facing crisis throughout Berks, Carbon, Lehigh, Northampton, and Schuylkill counties.
